Day 12, Col du Galibier

I really prefer the mountains (or the seashore) to the city.  They are so beautifu, spacious, and pristene.  So today we headed back into the mountains to retrace the route of the Tour over the Col du Galibier, the Col du Lautaret, and the Col du Télégraphe.

Before we attacked these mountains, however, we walked to a cafe in Place Notre Dame for our usual light breakfast.  From there we went to a nearby boulangerie to pick up some sandwiches for lunch and then to Les Halles Market to purchase some strawberries.

Col du Lautaret

The next 8 KM up to the Col du Galibier were the steepest and scariest we have encountered in France.  I can't imagine how the Tour de France riders did it....twice!

Cycling up probably isn't as scary as driving up, but cycling down.  Oh la la!

Looking up to the Col du Galibier.  This was the highest climb in this year's Tour de France.  The last time we tried to go there to watch the Tour, they closed the road because of snow!

Gary, this beer's for you!

More Glaciers than our Glacier National Park-but I'm sure these have shrunken or completed melted too.  I'm not sure why since there's no such thing as climate change.

We returned to our hotel around 6 pm, just enough time to relax, shower, and catch up on news, email, etc.  We then headed out for our 8 pm dinner reservation at Chez Marius, where we had lunch the day before.  Our meal was very good and certainly worthy of our return.

Notre Dame de Grenoble

I love this fountain.  The drought has all the fountains dry.

Profiteroles...we shared this one!

C'est tout. Bon nuit.  Tomorrow, the Pyrenees.

I remarked to Mogens how scary this ride was. Too steep for me!

What a charming restaurant (those chandeliers!), and the food looks fantastic. As always, enjoying the blog very much.
