Day 4-Vineyards & Ventoux

When I think of Provence, I think of vineyards, sunflower fields, and Mont Ventoux.  That was the focus for our day which started at our outdoor breakfast table at Le Mas Perreal.

Scrambled eggs with truffle oil.  Truffles were first discovered in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt by Joesph Talon.

Here's Joe.

As soon as we finished breakfast we drove into the village of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt to pay homage to Joseph Talon, and to pick up some bread and fruit for our picnic lunch.  Our next destinations for the day were the Côtes du Rhône vineyards in the villages of Vacqueras and Gigondas where we sampled and purchased some of the local best wines.

Les Dentelles de Gigondas

Leaving the vineyards behind, we then headed to the summit of Mont Ventoux, elevation=6,323 ft.  We descended from the summit on a different route, the steeper and more commonly used one in the Tour de France, and soon found a delightful picnic spot where we could enjoy the views as well as the cooler temps. It was 20°F cooler at the summit than in the valley!

Returning to our B&B around 6 pm, we power napped, and then showered before heading into Apt for pizza. The pizza was delicious, but I'll spare you the pix.  You know what good pizza looks like!

Love the market scenes. Interesting similarities between Japanese and French cuisine: exquisite miniatures that taste good!
